Past Trek: Inca Trail/Machu Picchu, September 2008
After stops in Lima, Cusco (3500m/11,500ft) and the Sacred Valley, we will trek on the Inca Trail for 3 days before arriving at the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu. This trail is just a fraction of the 23,000km of roads built by the Incas across South America. The trail passes through lush tropical jungle, eucalyptus forests and climbs through mountains as it reaches an elevation of 4200m (13,776ft) at the Warmimanusca pass. Machu Picchu is a UNESCO World Heritage site whose history and original name have been lost to the ages. It was last inhabited in the 16th century and "re-discovered" in the 20th century when it was named after a nearby mountain peak, which in the ancient Quechua language means "old mountain". An optional tour of the world's highest navigable lake, Lake Titicaca(3820m/12,500ft) and La Paz will follow the trek.
